Sick Small Science

The first day NOT back to school and spider seedlings!

Back to school….or not!

Tuesday. 5am. The first day back to school…. and the girls start the day by puking. A lot. Now by the schools own rules -they can’t go back for another two days from the time they stop vomiting.

Sick day

While idling the morning away to OKGO! videos, I overheard the girls discussing the meaning of “Interject” which set off a whole comparison of Interject vs Interrupt, including a fair few comic examples. Accidental English lesson for the day completed. Check.

While watching THIS video, we got talking about how it was made; and something I love most about OKGO is that they never use any CG or AI in any of their videos. There are no clever editing tricks or cuts, just perfect planning and amazing execution! Well, you know what I mean. The amount of bread that this video must have taken blows my mind, with each slice flowing together like a flick-book; which gave us the perfect sit-down-and-try-not-to-puke activity!

For reference: The dodgy sunrise was my example- the really cool flower growing from a seed was Small! Which leads quite nicely into…

Biology. With the greenhouse freshly cleared of Nettles she set about a spot of planting. She went through everything, decided what would be the most useful food for us; and picked out and planted up an assortment for our summer larder. (Oh, and I *may* have surrupticiously stuck some Cleavers to her back for a laugh…….)

When we went to water in our seeds, Small spotted this amazing little nest (?) of beautiful spider hatchlings. After watching them for a while, and discussing the life cycles of various insects (and arachnids) we decided to leave them to their tiny lives and use a different watering can.

Digging holes

While we busied away in the greenhouse, Big set herself to work with some amateur Archaeology. Having excavated this shard of; (she speculated- plate, cup, possibly something to do with the many septic systems we’ve been forced to install over the last decade…) history, she proceeded to very carefully clean it up. With my piping tip cleaner. D’oh. And yet- a sacrifice I’m happy to make in the face of her pure joy and industriousness.

One thing this girl has always loved is digging a good hole for herself! At some point during the whole lock-down debacle; (HOW lucky I felt having access to a garden!) Big decided to start digging through to China, and eventually found the hose… which led to the most fun day splashing around in a giant muddy hole with her sister! Much to the Big Mans dismay, when he found that extraordinarily muddy children were the order of the day. I, however, truly believe that children should be at least a little feral.
