Hillforts and hiccups.
And thus the actual first day back at school arrives, complete with a morning of stomach aches, sore throats and tears; and then eventually getting out of the door just in time.
After school we decided to go for a last minute jolly up to Eggardon Hillfort. It’s one of our favourite spots for a quick low-maintenence blow out. Cue Big, half way around going “Could you keep [Small] away from me, please? It’s just too much, I just need to be by myself.” On a giant open country hill. With only us on it. After ONE day.

On the upside- we spent a really lovely hour wandering the perimeter of the Hillfort watching the gorgeous Highland Cows grazing and talking about ramparts, ditches, Iron-age agriculture, living conditions and identifying wildflowers. As we walked, we discussed what sort of construction would have been used for various different elements; explored all the little geological nooks and crannies and speculated about what features these would have housed/been used for by the settlements that inhabited the hill over the centuries.
And most importantly, of course….. we blew out the cobwebs, stretched our legs and got some much-needed sunshine!
Then what?
Well, as it was a school day, our efforts were curtailed by the need for dinner and bed- and all that that requires, so thus endeth the day.

And then as always at the moment- once the girls got to bed I settled in for the night working on reformatting and reconstructing the ancient digital files for the resource section. Tonights edition was working through THESE fantastic History resource books on the Tudor, Stuart, Medieval and Georgian period.
Although the good old Georgians still need a fair bit of work….
